City Center Heraklion

Heraklion Town is a busy municipality with many things to do and see, however there is little left of its historic beginnings. The Old Port on the harbor is one of the landmarks still preserved as well as the Venetian Walls with its ramparts and gates. At the entrance to the Old Port is the castle of the Venetian Fortress and features an outdoor theatre. For shopping, be sure to the Municipal Market where you can find everything from fresh fish and other foodstuffs to local goods of all sorts. Venizelos Square houses the Morosini Fountain, which was built during Venetian times in the style of the Square of Saint Mark in Venice. The Vikelian Library is also a great place to visit to see its massive inventory of books and lovely architecture.
