Matala’s ancient history includes its use as a major port in Roman times and earlier. The caves dug in rocks surrounding the sea were also used by ancient peoples, and there is still a church dedicated to Panaghia which is located in one of the caves as well. The church includes an old catacomb used as a tomb for Christians persecuted by the Romans. Nearby is the archeological site of Kommos, with artifacts from the Minoan era and other indications which suggested its use as a port.
