Crete is the furthest south of all of the Greek islands and is a stunning place to visit. With a rich culture, amazing history and beautiful beaches, you are sure to fall in love with this place. Knossos, a Minoan site close to the capital of Heraklion attracts many tourists, as does the town of Rethymno which offers many fantastic shops and restaurants.
For the perfect mix of history and culture with nightlife and shops, Chania is ideal; sit at one of the cafes, bars or restaurants around the stunning harbor and look out on the Venetian lighthouse. Further inland on Crete you will find typically traditional villages with gorgeous little churches and old buildings. With locals still using donkeys for transportation and widows wearing traditional black dressing, you will feel as though you have stepped back in time when visiting these places. The Somaria Gorge is ideal for those who would like to remain active during their vacation, as the gorge can be walked and many guided tours are given here.
