Githio Hotels and Accommodation
You may have noticed by now that the names of towns in Greece often have multiple spellings in English. The town of Githio in the prefecture of Laconia is no exception. Your search for a discount Githio hotel will obviously include budget hotels in Githio but may also include those in Gytheio, Gytheum, Gythio, Githion, or even Yithion. The town was once the most important port in the region in ancient times but an earthquake changed that in 375 A.D. Today it is the capital of the region of Gytheio and also the largest town on the Mani Peninsula.
Legend has it that Githio was founded by Heracles and Apollo. The town is just 40 kilometers from Sparta and was under Greek rule until it was captured by Caesar Augustus. The Roman name for the town was Gythium, and the majority of the Roman ruins are now underwater in the Laconian Gulf. You can enjoy the beach in Githio or visit one of the small islands in the gulf including Cranae, which is conveniently connected to Githio by a causeway.
