Known as the Basilica of Olous, this early Christian basilica in Elounda is believed to have been constructed during the Byzantine era. It is also said that this rectangular-shaped basilica was built on the foundations of a much older temple, as was most common during the emergence of Christianity. A three-naved basilica, its eastern and western areas are being dominated by majestic columns created from local black stones. The floors of the church were also mosaiced and depicted beautiful flowers and charming dolphins. The adornments of the basilica and the architectural style used in its construction has resulted in its having an appearance of a very luxurious house of prayer.
