Milatos Hotels and Accommodation

The Milatos of today is renowned, not only for its picturesque little fishing port and charming, though small, sandy beach, but more for the superb sea and harborfront fish restaurants that have helped to build its reputation. The Milatos of yesteryear, however, was an important city, one of only 7 in Crete which sent troops to fight in Troy, but is probably better known for the Milatos Cave. It was here, in 1823, that local residents took refuge from the Turks, only for the brave warriors amongst them, as well as women, children and priests alike to be massacred. Memorials to the victims of this tragedy were erected in a small church, just 10 meters inside the cave, and at the small church of St Thomas which stands alongside. The cave itself measures a massive 2,100 meters, has 8 small and larger entrances, is 73 meters long and 63 meters wide at its widest point. Visitors can see some exquisite stalactites and stalagmites inside, but as you will be greeted by complete darkness on entering the cave, it is important to remember to take your flashlight.
