Kavala Hotels and Accommodation
Kavala is a major port city. The entryway to eastern Macedonia, it offers modern entertainment and ancient architecture. Its past shines forth in the glowering Byzantine Kastro (Castle). In 1425, the Venetians took control. The Turks had enlarged and upgraded it. Today, you can see the ramparts, the towers and an early Byzantine cistern. There is also the small amphitheater constructed by Sulyman the Great in 1550. He also built Kamares Aqueduct, connecting the old and new parts of the city. The walls are so thick, guards could walk along the tops. See if EasyToBook.com has a hotel in Kavala nearby.
While many visitors arrive to stay in hotels in Kavala for a glimpse of the Kastro, others prefer to admire the Turkish architecture of the city. This includes the Ottoman Imaret (1817) with its many domes and the birthplace of the Imaret’s prior owner, Mehmet Ali, the Pasha of Egypt. Mehmet’s birthplace features wood paneled reception rooms. On your way to visit it, you will pass an equestrian statue of Mehmet. Other marvels not far from most Kavala hotels include the Archeological Museum. It consists of exhibits of late Neolithic and early Bronze Age artifacts. Some come from Philippi, other from Diliki Tash. Holding special place is the Macedonian tomb from Amphipolis. Finds include an elegant painted mirror of silver, gold wreathes and polychrome glass and jewelry. A complete reconstruction contains painted funerary couches. There is also the Tobacco Museum with photos and antique packages of the history of tobacco in the region. The Municipal Tobacco Warehouse also attests to the past involvement in the trade. Built around 1910, this pink façade building now is home to municipal offices.
