Kyparissia Hotels and Accommodation
With a history going back some 4,000 years, the coastal town of Kyparissia was known as Arkadia in the Middle Ages. Situated on the western coast of Messinia in the Peloponnese region of mainland Greece, the town is built at the foot of Mt Psihro and has two very distinct quarters – the upper part being the traditional settlement, and the lower part the modern town. A medieval castle, erected originally by the Byzantines but later renewed and extended by the Franks, the Turks and the Venetians, sits at the heart of the old town, a very beautiful and historical place to take a walk and soak up the atmosphere. The modern part of the town, with its small harbor from where the first ship was sent to the Trojan war, is a much busier area and is where you will find the main shops and hotels.
Staying at one of the hotels in Kyparissia will put you right on the shoreline of the Ionian Sea, close to a stretch of sandy beach which runs northwards for many kilometers. Here you will find the nesting sites of the giant Mediterranean sea turtle, ‘Caretta- caretta’, second only to the huge number of sites on the island of Zakynthos. Cheap hotels are available through EasyToBook.com and who knows, you may even be lucky enough to witness the natural wonder of the hatching of the eggs. The area around Kyparissia offers much for the visitor to see and do, from a visit to the nearby Ancient Olympia or Apollo’s Temple in the sanctuary of Vasses, to a day out in Kalamata, the capital town of Messinia.
