Pylos Hotels and Accommodation
Pylos is one of the most attractive coastal towns in Greece and bears a closer resemblance to one of the country’s islands than a mainland town. With its picturesque narrow streets and pure white two-storey houses set behind courtyards full of flowers, it has a charm all of its own. The town is set on top of, and between two hills, and overlooks the Navarino Bay in the Messinia region of the Peloponnese. In an area surrounded by olive groves, Pylos is dominated on the west side by the hexagonal fortress of Neokastro, the ‘new castle’, although built by the Ottomans in 1573. The ‘old castle’, Paleokastro, was built by the Franks in 1278 and is located on the opposite side of the bay. It is said to be connected by an underground passage to Nestor’s cave where, according to Greek mythology, the god Hermes hid the cows stolen from his divine brother Apollo. The Mycenean Palace of the legendary King Nestor can be found close by and is one of the best preserved of all Mycenean palaces. Many of the artifacts and frescos from the site are now housed in the archaeological museum in the nearby village of Chora.
Despite the beauty of the town itself, and of the surrounding countryside, Pylos remains relatively unspoiled by tourism and is not overrun by tourist shops and hotels. EasyToBook.com, however, does offer accommodation at budget hotels in the town, from where you can wander down to the main square on the waterfront, and relax at one of the cafés in the shade of the ancient trees.
