Zakinthos Hotels and Accommodation
The Greek island of Zakinthos, sometimes called Zante, is the third largest of the Ionian Islands and has a coastline of 123 kilometers. It is thought to have been inhabited since the 16th century BC. Its capital town bears the same name as the island itself and has a resident population of around 12,000 inhabitants. Extensively rebuilt since a major earthquake in 1953 devastated much of the island, Zakinthos town is a main ferry port from where passengers can travel to the opposite coast of the Peloponnese on mainland Greece, or indeed take a pleasure trip around the island. The town, with its variety of marketplaces, museums, churches, shops, hotels and restaurants, gets quite busy during the summer months as it offers much to do and see. Excellent discount hotels in Zakinthos, within easy reach of all the local attractions and facilities, can be booked through EasyToBook.com.
The original architecture of Zakinthos town was largely influenced by the Venetians, the French and the English, all of whom colonized the island at one time or another. Although most of the traditional buildings and churches were destroyed in the earthquake, you can still see the remains of the old Venetian castle above the town, and in areas such as Solomos Square, attempts were made to preserve the traditional architecture. The square, surrounded by some very elegant buildings, sits at the heart of the cultural life of the town, whilst the long waterfront between here and the Church of Agios Dionysios is the most popular and crowded area. It is also on Solomos Square that the Museum of Post-Byzantine Art is situated. During your stay, a boat trip around the island is essential to properly appreciate the raw and natural beauty of this little island. The boats all make a number of ‘swim stops’ along the way, the most significant being at Shipwreck Cove, one of the most photographed sights in the world.
