The chances are very good you aren’t going to feel completely at home in the House of Terror Museum in Budapest, Hungary, but you will at least come to understand why the original curators of this place believed it to be so important. It isn’t intended to be creepy or even morbidly entertaining, as much as to be a memorial to all of those brave Hungarians that were tortured and killed on the sight in the name of freedom. The museum is a statement about both the Nazi and the Socialist occupation of this gorgeous country.

Inside the walls of this former jail, torture chamber, and execution chamber, you will find not only memorials to the people needlessly and cruelly murdered, but also artifacts of the regimes responsible for the tragedies. The museum has had its share of controversy, but since its doors opened in 2002, it has become a very popular, though upsetting place to visit.
