One of the biggest attractions to Americans in terms of visiting Europe is the fortresses and palaces and the country of Hungary has these things in spades. For example the Citadella in Budapest has been around since 1851. When it was constructed, its purpose was to allow the Hapsburgs to keep control of the city and prevent any further rebellion. Its history continues to the WWII era, in which the German occupying forces unfortunately used it as an air raid bunker.
For a nice change of pace, the Citadella did finally receive a better purpose for existing. It is primarily used as an observation tower today and it is the perfect viewing point to see the famous Liberation Monument which stands 14 meters tall and is a monument to all of those who died to protect Hungary and its prosperity. The rich history and amazing view make this attraction worth visiting.
