Once the royal residence and one of the most important cities in the country, Szekesfehervar, Hungary, might not hold as much prominence today, but it remains a popular destination for travelers. Located about 40 miles from Budapest this city in Fejer continues to attract visitors with its many unusual and historic sites. The city and the area around it have been populated since the 5th century BC. It served as an important center for government during the early Magyar Period, but fell into ruin during the Ottoman Empire. A revival of sorts occurred during the Hapsburg Empire, but Szekesfehervar never quite regained its positioning.
