Vas County is part of Western Hungary. There are several rivers, including the Raba, the Pinka and the Marcal. Visitors to the County of Vas soon learn it is on the Kisalfold (Little Hungarian Plain). They can roam from Vas to the hills of Orség and Vendvidék. Here, you can wander the Garden of Ruins with shards of Roman mosaics. Here, too, is an 18th century Bishop’s Palace and the Kámoni Arboretum. For those who wish to stay for more than a weekend, Vas offers the spas at Bükfurdo and the Romanesque abbey Church at Ják. There is more to this area than you think on a first impression. Bükfurdo is famous for its spas, but Sárvár is famous for being home to the notorious “Blood Countess,” Báthori. Check out her castle in the city or stay for the International Folklore Festival. Alternatively, attend the Dance Festival at Szombathely.
