The Grótta in Seltjarnarnes is south west Iceland’s premiere bird sanctuary. Located at the tip of the Reykjavik peninsula, Seltjarnarnes becomes an island at high tide. The area is laced with walking paths, providing visitors with excellent opportunities to view the iconic local lighthouse as well as a sneak peek at the Arctic Terns that make their home in the area. There are intriguing rock formations, as well as unobstructed views of the sea and great photo opportunities for visitors all over the “island”.
Despite its remote appearance, the Grótta at Seltjarnarnes is easy for tourists to access via public transport – a number of city busses go to the Seltjarnarnes area daily. Recommendations for visitors range from the strange – take an umbrella as it may frighten the terns if they dive bomb you; to the practical – be mindful of the tide times so you don’t get stuck on the tip of the peninsula at high tide!
