Iceland's National University Hospital in Reykjavik is known as the Landspítalinn to locals. The centre serves as the cornerstone for the health services in all of Iceland – this is largely due to the fact that all Icelandic doctors are required to complete at least one rotation here to earn their certification. The National University Hospital is nearly 90% funded through Iceland’s general budget, receiving around a quarter of the funds spent on the entire health service. Landspítalinn receives the balance of it’s operational fund from patient contributions and services provided to other medical outlets.
Iceland’s tourists are welcome to attend the emergency ward for injuries and illnesses during their visit to the nation – provided you’ve brought the requisite documentation. Another area of interest at Iceland’s National University Hospital is the medical library, featuring over 7,000 titles. Landspítalinn has a world renown tradition of research and quality in medicine.
