Mount Esja is an icon of the Reykjavik skyline – visible from virtually everywhere. Many tourists are surprised to find that their trek to the top of this prestigious peak can begin with a simple bus ride – that’s right, it’s accessible via public transportation. Hop on a number 15 or 27 bus from the heart of the city, and let the driver know you want to go to Esja. You’ll be let off in a car park at the base of Mount Esja.
Your hike to the summit doesn’t involve a steep climb, parts of the trail are even fitted with steps to ease your ascent. The scenery along the way includes streams, native trees and a good variety of wildlife – you’ll want to bring your camera to capture the view from the top. And, add your name to the guestbook once you reach the summit.
