Reykjavik City Museum, also known as Arbaejarsafn, or Arbaer Museum, features a farm that was in active use until as recently as the mid-1900s. The museum was established following fears that the ‘old ways’ of Iceland’s growing capital city were disappearing – moves to establish a museum to chronicle and showcase key elements of Reykjavik’s culture began in 1942. Arbaejarsafn opened in 1957, and has since grown to include over 20 buildings forming an authentic Icelandic town square and village in addition to the original farm site.

In summer months, visitors to Arbaer Museum can experience a living glimpse into the past, complete with domestic animals and period costume participants. The museum has an on-site café, two shops and tour guides available. Visitors are encouraged to take part in craft fares, car shows and a variety of holiday exhibitions. Admission tickets are a great value, good for two visits.
