Hafnarborg, also known as the Hafnarfjordur Institute of Culture and Fine Art, was a gift from Sverrir Magnússon and his wife Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir to the people of the region in 1983. The couple passed on not only their house, but also a variety of significant paintings and books – and the museum at Hafnarborg opened to showcase the collection in mid 1988. Since it opened, other local artists and citizens have made gifts to grow the collection, and the city officials have made additional purchases.

The Art Institute of Hafnarborg is administered by the city of Hafnarfjörður, and is open most days between 11am and 5pm – with extended hours on Thursdays. On site at the museum, visitors can enjoy a bite to eat or a drink in the Café, take in one of the many exhibitions that stops at the Hafnarborg Museum each year or stay into the evening to enjoy a live show.
