Reykjavik’s Art Museum was first founded in 1973. Today, Reykjavik Art Museum and it’s programmes are split between three venues – at Hafnarhus, visitors can find a variety of exhibits featuring projects by young, up-and-coming artists from the whole of Iceland showcased in D-Gallery. Also, a popular exhibition of Erro’s work from DC and Marvel comics, is featured at Hafnarhus. The galleries at Hafnarhus showcase a variety of styles and periods of art – often with modern artists exhibited side by side with those of a more classical nature.
Open daily from 10am to 5pm, the Reykjavik Art Museum at Hafnarhus provides visitors a café with a view of the harbour, as well as free wireless internet access. The museum shop offers a variety of art books and catalogues, as well as gifts and souvenir items, such as castings from some of a selection of Asmundur Sveinsson’s well-known works. Guided tours are available, and admission to Hafnarhus is free.
