Þjóðmenningarhúsið, or The Culture House, is Iceland’s National Centre for Cultural Heritage. When the building first opened to the public in 1909, it housed Iceland’s National Library and National Archives. Today, Iceland’s tourists will find exhibitions at The Culture House truly special – usually showcasing national treasures and rare artifacts, as well as providing a look at trends in Icelandic society. Þjóðmenningarhúsið hosts a series of chamber music concerts throughout the year, offering visitors a unique setting to experience the classics, as well as up and coming Icelandic performers and composers.
Guided tours are available at scheduled times for a nominal fee, but visitors to The Culture House are also encouraged to make their own way through the myriad of exhibitions at their own pace. If you have a special function to organise in Reykjavik, Þjóðmenningarhúsið also has a number of stunning meeting rooms that may be available for use.
