Listasafn Íslands, or the National Gallery of Iceland, offers a wide selection of art from the classic to the postmodern. The National Gallery hosts a number of exhibitions by Icelandic artists, as well as a selection of international artists. Founded in 1884 with a collection of work donated by Danish artisans, The National Gallery had many homes before arriving at it’s present location in 1987. Today, Listasafn Íslands provides visitors with a free look at scores of traveling exhibits in addition to the bountiful permanent collection.

Iceland’s National Gallery has a strong focus on native art from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but other notable collections include pieces by world famous artists like Picasso, Munch, Hartung, Vasarley, Appel and Tuttle. The National Gallery provides background information on all exhibitions. Visitors are encouraged to learn while onsite, as well as pick up books in the gift shop to further their understanding.
