Iceland’s proud history is displayed at Þjóðminjasafnið, the National Museum of Iceland. Recent renovations have left Þjóðminjasafnið with a myriad of different exhibits and state-of-the-art galleries designed to inspire visitors to discover more about Iceland. The flagship exhibition, Making of a Nation showcases centuries of Icelandic relics and artefacts that provide key points in the development of the nation. Other popular exhibits showcase virtually every aspect of Icelandic life, from Icelandic wedding customs to Icelandic photography.

Þjóðminjasafnið is open from 11am to 5pm daily, except for national holidays. The National Museum of Iceland is free for all to enter on Wednesday, there is a small fee for admission on other days. Tourists passing through Þjóðminjasafnið will find the café and shop both useful stops during their visit to the museum. The National Museum of Iceland is easily accessed from the Reykjavik area, as it’s situated in the heart of the city and located on a number of popular bus routes.
