Reykjavik 871±2 is focussed on interpreting the findings from a number of archaeological digs in Reykjavik and Viðey. The centrepiece of these findings is a small house that dates to 930 AD which was found in the centre of Reykjavik. This house is thought to be one of the first houses built in Iceland, and it is a permanent part of The Settlement Exhibition at Reykjavik 871±2. The museum also showcases a number of Viking artifacts and other unique historic objects from Reykjavik and surrounding communities.

The aim of the Reykjavik 871±2 project is to give visitors a feel for what it was like to live during the period when the showcase house was originally constructed. The project is owned and operated by Reykjavik City Museum, and uses a number of multimedia portals to give visitors a well-rounded experience and taste for the life of Iceland's people circa 930 AD.
