The largest indoor market in Iceland - and the only one you'll find in the capital city - is Kolaportid. Some of the stalls are permanent, but for the most part, Kolaportid operates more like a car boot sale than a traditional market. It is relatively cheap to rent a spot to sell your crafts, or whatever you’ve cleared out of the loft. The market is open Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 5pm in a warehouse near the harbour.

Though the majority of goods on offer might be initially dismissed as junk, there is plenty of real gold to be found for those willing to spend the time trawling the stalls for everything from vinyl records to antique furnishings. Having said that, Kolaportid has a phenomenal food court, offering a wide variety of traditional Icelandic gastronomical delights, including pickled herring, Icelandic sweets, potatoes, cured shark, dried fish and other delicacies.
