Go to the Malankara Orthodox Church of St. Mary’s. This “Little Church” dates from 1579. Inside are several fine murals of the 1600s. The other St. Mary’s Church (Valia Palli) is larger edifice. Inside are some interesting Persian inscriptions and a Persian stone cross. The churches are not far from the heart of the town. In here, close to several comfortable Kottayam hotels, is the Thirunakkara Mahedeva Temple. It, like St. Mary’s, is from the 16th century. This Kerla-style temple to Shiva features several murals inside. They all focus on themes from the significant Hindu epics.
