For those visiting the Orchha area of India and taking in the many sights and wonders that it has to offer, there is none greater than the Raj Mahal. One of several palaces in close proximity to one another in Orchha, the Raj Mahal is a unique fusion of Hindu and Islamic architecture that intrigues and baffles historians even to this day. The façade is deceptively simple with tiny ornate carvings, but not much else except for a liberal use of the domes that would become a famous part of Indian architecture.
However, the palace was built by the deeply religious Madhukar Shah, and as such, the interior has quite a few surprises to offer. Visitors to the Raj Mahal can enjoy an impressive array of beautiful full color hand painted murals, depicting scenes from Hindu and Islamic theologies in pristine detail. Visitors can explore on their own or take advantage of guided tours being offered on a regular basis. Many of the guides can speak English, making this a very popular attraction.
