Clifden Castle, with its unique posture towards the estuary, was built by John D'Arcy in the late 18th century. After John's son and heir went bankrupt, one of the most treasured attractions in Clifden went on sale. It was ,rather, purchased for a lower price that its real value. The Castle is now managed by the Irish government and is up for admiration by those that value ancient arts and buildings.

The Clifden Castle features the standing stones, which were erected by D'Arcy to imitate other standing stones that can be found around Ireland. After an extensive survey, it has come to notice that the standing stones were not as ancient as D'Arcy would have us believe. Nevertheless, the little remains that are left of the house are still a must see. A few additions were made to the castle, to add a touch of modern décor to the building and its walkway.
