County Leitrim is one of the counties of the Irish province of Connacht. Its name comes from the Irish meaning “grey ridge”. Leitrim is famous for its stunning and dramatic lakes, of which the best known are Lough Melvin, Lough Allen and Lough Gill. Lough Melvin is well known for the vast array of plant and wildlife that can be found in and around its shores; Lough Allen offers visitors outstanding panoramas and Lough Gill is overlooked by Parkes’ Castle. Leitrim County gives visitors the opportunity to interact with lush Irish country side and enjoy outdoor activities along with historically interesting sites and monuments. EasyToBook.com has discount hotels to accommodate you during your Irish getaway.

Tourist attractions in the county include: Parkes’ Castle, which is a restored 17th century turreted castle; Cloonmorris Church, which is a 13th century Augustinian church that also boasts an ancient Ogham Stone and Creevlea Franciscan Friary, established in 1508. County Leitram has relied on potato farming as a major economic source and was sorely hit during the potato famines of the 19th century. There is a fascinating Famine Museum and Memorial located in an old workhouse. One of the most popular outdoors activities in the region is fishing on the Shannon River and hiking around the rolling hills and lakes. Coracloona Megalithic Tomb can also be visited in the county, which is said to be the tomb of Prince Connell. The tomb is unusual for the area and more similar to tombs found in France. County Leitram is located in the western part of Ireland.
