Sligo Hotels and Accommodation

The port town of Sligo sits insolently at the mouth of the River Garavogue. Here arrive the aficionados of the great poet W. B. Yeats. These tourists book hotels in Sligo close to the central core. If they are lucky, they can find a room in a Sligo hotel not far from either the Yeat’s Memorial Building or the W.B. Yeat’s statue. The statue stands in front of the Ulster Bank. This building dates from 1863. James Hamilton is responsible for its Scottish sandstone construction with its delicate and artistic detailing. Nearby is the famous Hyde Bridge.
It is not very difficult to find a hotel in Sligo near the central core. EasyToBook.com provides insight into Sligo hotels near the evocative Famine Monument (1997) on Quay Street. You might also find accommodation close to either of the town’s two cathedrals. The Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is a wonderful Neo-Renaissance Romaesque structure from 1874. The original architect was George Goldie from London. The 9 bells in the tower are from the Murphy foundry in London. The magnificent 69 stained glass windows let in abundant light. This is not as true of St. John’s Cathedral. This building, the design of Richard Cassels, a German, has less light entry. It makes up for it with the number of memorial plaques. Four of these concern the Yeats Family. From here, head over to the ruins of the Abbey. You can see the delicate lancet windows in the choir, the graceful cloister and the finely carved altar. If you are spending several days, you must visit the Sligo County Museum with its collection of Yeats memorabilia as well as local artifacts. Another popular sight is the Sligo Town Hall (1864). This neo-Italian Renaissance building is by William Hague. Inside is a very elegant hall.
