The fort was built in 1735 and has a good view of the area. While the British were occupying the country, they used it to remind people of their rule. There have only been two raids on it since and both times the ammunition was stolen, once in 1916 when attempts were made to blow up the fort were unsuccessful and once in 1939 when the IRA took what was there - to the embarrassment of the Irish army.
