This island, located just about 300 meters off the coast, is truly a spot to visit. Archaeological digs indicate that Dalkey Island was inhabited as a Viking base about 6000 years ago. Remains of the old St. Bergen's Church, believed to be from the early 7th century, give a true feeling of history to a walk around the island. Although only about 22 acres or 9 acres in size, it also is home to a gun battery and a Martello tower dating from 1804.
While on Dalkey Island, be prepared to see a herd of nomadic goats and lots of wildlife, particularly rabbits. In addition, the shores provide excellent fishing and opportunities to view seals and other marine life. A bird sanctuary on the island provides opportunity to see local species in their natural habitat.
