The Mater Misericordiae Hospital has an interesting history and is a great building to look at, even if you’re not visiting sick relatives. The hospital has an impressive façade with pillars and tall windows, and steps leading up to the main entrance. It was established in 1861. It was set up by Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy, and her devotion to the people of North Dublin is very much reflected in the hospital’s policies today.
The hospital specializes these days in cardiothoracic and spinal surgery, but has many other departments as well. It has a large patient capacity, serving both inpatients and outpatients and over 3000 staff members. It has some teaching and educational areas as well as a private nursing area.
