This massive 120 meter (390 foot) spire is easy to spot, regardless of where you might be in Dublin. Officially called the Monument of Light, or An Túr Solais in Irish, this modern monument really does act as a beacon in both the daylight and the night. The top 12 meters are illuminated at night, and the special surfacing of the monument reflects light of many different colors throughout the day.

The Spire of Dublin was designed by Ian Ritchie Architects, as part of a program to improve the neigborhood of O'Connell Street after IRA bombings destroyed the previous monument, Nelson's Pillar, in 1966. Rather than return to a traditional monument, the Spire was designed to bring a modern yet timeless theme to the area. You can also browse through the many boutiques and shops, or dine at the restaurants that line O'Connell Street around the monument.
