The hospital itself was originally established in 1834 by Mother Mary Aikenhead and the Sisters of Charity, which was a prominent religious organization. The hospital was moved to its current location in 1970, and became a University teaching hospital in 1999. The hospital is closely tied with research and training through the University College Dublin.
St. Vincent's University Hospital has 479 inpatient beds, and also provides outpatient and emergency care services. There are over 40 major clinics, specializations or departments within the hospital, that range from cardiology through to cancer research and a full organ transfer center. Teaching areas within St. Vincent University Hospital include medical social workers, nurses, specialist physicians, dieticians and medical therapists. As of January 2009, the hospital buildings and grounds are all non-smoking.
