It is the largest obelisk in Europe, and is positioned in Phoenix Park, Dublin. It was built to commemorate the victories of the first Duke of Wellington, who was born in Dublin, and the Monument was built during his lifetime. The obelisk stands on a wide base, which has four bronze plaques around it. Three of them have pictures of his career, and the fourth has an inscription.
Underneath the base there is vault, where it is rumored a fundraising dinner was held before the vault was finally closed up forever - and it is thought that a butler was accidentally left inside.
