Dun Laoghaire Rathdown is a county in Ireland that was formed in 1994 from part of the old county of Dublin. It borders the city of Dublin, and has a coastal area on the Irish Sea. The town of Dun Laoghaire is its administrative center. You are in the land of King Laoghaire, a 5th century High King of Ireland. His crown is part of the countys official coat-of-arms. In the town of Dun Laoghaire you can visit the National Maritime Museum. It is housed in the 19th century Mariners Church. Among the exhibits are some excellent model ships. You can also see a ships boat that was captured during a failed French invasion in 1796. The two Dun Laoghaire Piers are each over a mile long. Both offer fine views of Dublin Bay. The East Pier has a bandstand and a monument to the hero Captain McNeil Boyd. For lovers of great literature, the James Joyce Museum is a must-see. Its collection includes letters, photographs, rare first editions, personal possessions, and a death mask of the famous Irish novelist. The museum is housed in an old Martello Tower in which the first chapter of Joyces masterpiece Ulysses is set. Also of interest are Dalkey Castle with its 10th century graveyard, and Airfield Gardens and Walk, which has a Vintage Car Museum.
