The Reasc Monastery is an amazing attraction located in the Dingle Peninsula, situated a few kilometres further down the coastal road. It is speculated that in was in use from about the end of the fifth century until the end of the tenth century, though it is also said that the site has been sacred for ages. The monastery was preserved with the utmost caution, particularly its enclosure that contains several carved stone slabs, burial grounds and huts .
This enclosure was excavated in 1974 by professionals, whose findings can now be found at the museum in Ballyferriter. Amongst the findings are slabs carved with a mixture of Celtic and Christian patterns, which illustrate the unique incorporation of Christianity in the existing pagan religion. Christianity in Ireland has adopted the ancient sacred sites, wells, stones and symbols and ancient legends and heroes are immortalised by the penmanship of the monks. This monastery is a definite must see when traveller passes through Dingle.
