Hotels near Kilmakedar Church in Dingle - Best deals & budget rates!

This ancient monastery was founded in the seventh as one of the foremost Early Christian attraction of the Dingle Peninsula. Its founder went by the name of St Maolcathair. The building that can now be seen is a twelfth century building consisting of a nave to which a chancel was added at a later date, as was the usual practice. A lot of the features which typify Irish Romanesque architecture can be seen. The bold antae with animal-head decoration have long been well preserved, just like the round headed doorway with blank tympanum.

This building also has high pitched gables, of which one has finial, which have survived intact, except the original barrel vaulted roof whereby only the merest fragments remain. This is a definite place that the traveler must go to, in order to experience its ancient ambiance that is very much rare to locate in such a modern world.
