The Geraldine Earls of Desmond founded the town of Newcastle west in the late 13th century. Most of the towns’ surviving remains of the medieval town date back to the 15th century including, Desmond Hall, even though it was built earlier than most of the buildings which date back from this period. The Desmond Hall, now a great monument in Newcastle west, is blessed with a two story building that has a small turret at one end and some well preserved window niches on the upper floor. Its ground includes ‘The Great Hall’, a one story banqueting hall.

The Desmond Hall has a vaulted lower chamber and an adjoining tower, which were all constructed during the 15th century. Its restored medieval features include an oak musicians’ gallery and a limestone hooded fireplace. Guided tours through the building are given on a daily basis to the visitor. The traveller can also get to experience some seasonal events that are organised by the management of the Hall.
