Louth is a county with a great deal of history to it. It was here that Edward Bruce, the would-be King of Ireland, was killed at the Battle of Faughart in the 1400's. The kings James and William battled bitterly in the north of Louth, escalating the hostilities that would culminate in the Battle of Boyne. Despite its rather conflict-ridden history, Louth today is known as a friendly, welcoming destination with a great deal of natural beauty. Ardee is a popular destination for tourists, and the location of Ardee Castle, the largest medieval tower house in Ireland. Dundalk is site of one of the oldest pre-Celtic settlements in Ireland. Other popular cities to visit within Louth include Dunleer, a major population center with many services and Geenore, a small port in the south of the county. .
