Drogheda means “Bridge of the Ford” and lies on the northeast Irish coast where the River Boyne meets the Irish Sea. Drogheda has many tourist attractions to interest visitors while enjoying their Irish getaway. Millmount Museum is a fort built in the 12th century and has medieval artifacts on display. The town of Drogheda was originally walled town and was accessed through 10 gates. St Lawrence’s Gate is the only surviving gate and is now a national monument. It has two huge round towers and a vaulted arch, which you cannot miss as you wander along St Lawrence Street. On the corner of St Peter’s Street and William Street stands St Peter’s Church. St Peter’s was built in 1748, in the memory of Oliver Plunkett Archbishop of Amagh, who was executed at Tyburn in 1681. His embalmed head is kept in the reliquary of the church.
