HaHaganah means “the Defense” in Hebrew. The Hagana was a Jewish martial group in the former British Mandate of Palestine dedicated to protecting Jewish interests. When the State of Israel was created in 1948, the Hagana became the basis for the Israel Defense Forces - in other words, it became the basis of the Israeli military. The Hagana museum is a great Israel attraction for those who are interested in history, especially Israeli history.
The museum located next to the home of an old general in the Hagana, Eliyahu Golomb. It has four stories, and its exhibits show the visitor a complete history of Jewish military presence in what was to be the state of Israel, from the beginning of the twentieth century up until 1948. Visitors will see how weapons were made in secret workshops, how Hagana members were trained, how battles were fought. The text of all the exhibits is in Hebrew, but the museum supplies interpreters for English-speaking visitors.
