Tourists looking for things to do in Israel should by no means miss the Trumpledor Cemetery in Tel Aviv if they have a morbid interest in the famous dead. All the best-known historical figures of Tel Aviv are buried here. These include Chaim Nahman Bialik, Israel's most famous poet; Meir Dizengoff, the first mayor of Tel Aviv, whose name adorns many of the city's public buildings; and Nachum Gutman, the Israeli painter.
There is much for the visitor to ponder here, as they wander through monuments commemorating the lives and deaths of historical figures. The grave markers often feature short biographies of those whose physical remains lie under the earth. Sometimes, the gravestones even describe how the people beneath them had met their end. In this peaceful environment, tourists can dream away the day, imagining the lives of people they never met and never will meet. What a paradox, that in this place of death it is history that comes alive.
