One of the historical sights of Acqui Terme that you shouldn’t miss is the Church of the Addolorata, also known as the Chiesa di San Pietro (the Church of Saint Peter). This church, located in the historical center of the town, dates to Paleo-Christian times, and was actually almost entirely rebuilt in the 10th and 11th centuries. During this reconstruction, the church was given a Romanesque style and was transformed into a Benedictine Abbey. The modifications to the church didn’t end there, however, and it was profoundly transformed further in the 18th century.

It was then restored and partially rebuilt in Neo-Romanesque style in the beginning of the 20th century (around the 1930s); at this time, most of the Baroque embellishments were removed. Today, some components of the original church can still be seen, such as the central nave, part of the lateral naves, the apses, the bell tower and the octagonal layout of the structure. The inside of the church reflects the numerous modifications that the church underwent; the chancel is elevated and hints at the presence of a crypt that today does not exist.
