If you’re looking for things to do in Alessandria, you should think about checking out the Church of Santa Maria di Castello, or la Chiesa di Santa Maria di Castello. The church has ancient origins and was originally built over two churches that date to the 9th and 11th centuries; the only remains that there are of the old churches are the foundations, located under the pavement of the current church. Construction on the current structure was begun in 1470 and completed in 1545. Following Napoleonic suppression, the convent adjacent to the church became a storehouse, then a hospital and then a prison.

In 1918 it housed the National Institute of War Orphans and then became a school. The current church was built in Gothic style, but has a Renaissance-style doorway in the center of its façade; within the church there are three naves, cross-shaped vaults and various works of art. Indeed, you can admire a sculpture group created in polychrome terracotta, which dates to the 16th century, a wooden choir that dates to the 17th century and a gravestone for Federico Dal Pozzo, which dates to the 14th century.
