Corinaldo is a town in the province of Ancona in the central Italian region of the Marche. It is found on a hill in Verdicchio wine country and is a remarkable example of a fortified medieval/renaissance town; indeed, the entire historical center of Corinaldo is enclosed in defensive walls whose perimeter measures about 912 meters and whose height is roughly 18 meters. These are some of the best preserved defensive walls in central Italy. Besides the walls, there are numerous historical monuments as well as important religious monuments that are definitely worth visiting.
You should check out the Civica Raccolta d’Arte “Claudio Ridolfi”, a small museum that houses works of art from the 17th century. The town is also the birthplace of Santa Maria Goretti, made a saint in the 20th century; she was murdered at the age of 12. The Church of San Francesco is also worth visiting as is the Palazzo Comunale. For a little bit of interesting folklore, visit “I Centoscalini” (The One Hundred Steps), where you’ll find the Pozzo della Polenta; here an interesting celebration, called the Contesa della Polenta, is held every year.
