If you’re looking for things to do in Aosta, you should take a walk alongside the impressive Roman Wall that once surrounded the ancient city. At certain regular intervals, the wall is interrupted by impressive towers; the general layout of this defensive complex dates to Roman times, though other towers have been constructed in subsequent historical periods. The Roman Wall Towers and the wall itself (called “cinta muraria” in Italian) are very well preserved and almost completely intact. On the eastern side of the perimeter of the wall, you’ll find Porta Pretoria, another of the impressive historical sights of Aosta.

The structure is composed of a solid wall of cement mortar and river cobblestones, which measures about 1.90 meters in thickness at its base. It is covered, towards the outer part, by blocks and slabs of travertine. Originally, it reached a height of about 6.5 meters and was reinforced by buttresses and a batter. The towers had two floors and have also reached us in relatively good conditions. Originally, there were about 20 towers that had the function of protecting this city, which was the last Roman outpost before Gaul. Both time and human intervention have modified the aspect of the towers, though; indeed, during the middle ages, some were actually used as homes for more affluent citizens. Some of the more important towers include Torre del Balivo, Tour Fromage, Tour du Pailleron, Torre di Bramafam, Torre del lebbroso, and Torneuve.
