Arezzo tourism flourishes thanks to the numerous historical and artistic monuments that have tourists flocking to the area. San Francesco Church, or La Chiesa di San Francesco, is one of the most popular monuments on the itineraries of visitors. It is essentially located at the ancient access point to the oldest part of the city; the Basilica itself dates to around the second half of the 1200s, but its current aspect is a result of various renovations completed in the 14th century. These renovations were carried out in Tuscan Gothic style and clearly inspired by criteria of aesthetic simplicity that derive from Franciscan ideologies. The last renovations conducted on the church date to the beginning of this century.

The building is constructed in stone and brick; the only remains of the intended sculpted paving stone lining for the façade can be seen in the basement, which dates to the 1400s. The bell tower, on the other hand, dates to the 16th century. The interior of the church has one nave, and recent renovations have returned it to its original and grandiose, albeit primitively simple, aspect. On both sides of the single nave, you can find chapels and spaces decorated with 14th century and Renaissance elements. Visitors are greatly attracted to the frescoes depicting scenes of the “Legend of the True Cross”, found above the main altar, and the lower Church, used as an exhibition hall.
