Capolona is not the original name of the small Tuscan town that is nestled alongside the River Arno, next to the city of Arezzo, the province’s capital. The town was first known as Campus Leonis in Roman times as proven by a deed dated 943 A.D. Over time, the two words of the name Campus Leonis gradually combined and the name was shortened to Capolona. The town was founded around the Abbey of San Gennaro in Campo Leoni, which was founded in 972. Due to various wars and raids, the town changed hands over the years until it became a part of the Florence region in 1527. It was this last battle that destroyed much of the town, though there are some interesting buildings and churches still standing.

Today about 5,000 people live in the village, which has really become a subdivision of Arezzo. It contains the hamlets, or neighborhoods, of Baciano and Lorenzano. Because of its proximity to Arezzo, there are a number of budget hotels either in or near Capolona. EasyToBook.com has the best cheap Capolona hotels for you when you're ready to book.
